Frankfurt International Airport (Germany)
Requirements Engineering for Terminal 1 and 2
Since 2005
Since 2005, Logplan has been involved in multiple projects at Frankfurt International Airport relating to the expansion and renovation of the Terminal 1 and 2 facilities.
Logplan developed requirements specifications (including space and functional programs) from the start of each project which formed the basis of the architectural design. In regular meetings lead by Logplan, requirements from all relevant airport departments as well as from external stakeholders were coordinated and then integrated into the planning and realization of the projects. Logplan is also supporting the final acceptance of the construction work and the start-up coordination.
Logplan has provided these services since 2005 for nearly all extension or reconstruction projects, such as:
- Extension of Hall C;
- BC Extension including High-Risk-Gate;
- New Concourse C;
- New Bus Gate Facilities;
- Reconstruction of Terminal 2;
- Redevelopment of Concourse CD for A380 Operations.
Requirements Engineering for the new Terminal 3
Since 2007
The new Terminal 3 will be located at the south side of the airport. An Automated-People-Mover system will connect Terminal 3 with the existing terminals and the airport train station.
The modular build up of Terminal 3 will consist of three parts:
- An approximately 12,000 m2 hall which will house up to 140 check-in counters.
- A second section which will accommodate the security check points.
- A central building block which will contain a wide concession area with retail and service facilities that will lead into the piers. The final construction stage will be comprised of four piers accessing 50 aircraft positions.
The first construction stage will include the central terminal building, two piers, as well as the airside and landside connections. As a part of Logplan's support for this project, we are providing the definition and coordination of all functional and space requirements with the stakeholders. The requirements are regularly issued and constantly monitored in a functional specification that serves as a baseline for architectural design. The architectural design is reviewed by Logplan for compliance with the requirements.
Project Management and Start-Up Coordination Concourse A-Plus
Since 2007
Frankfurt International Airport is currently developing a terminal extension named A-Plus. The project consists of the construction of a new pier, the conversion of concourse A and an extension of Hall A. The new pier will include seven aircraft positions capable of servicing either EU or Non-EU traffic. Construction work is planned to be completed in 2012. Prior to the construction of the new facilities, extensive reorganization of existing terminal areas will be necessary.
Logplan is responsible for the planning of operational processes during and after each construction phase. These processes are coordinated with all terminal users and issued in an operational manual.
As a part of our work for this project, Logplan is currently planning and coordinating all start-up activities, operational changes and their associated approval tests in coordination with the different airport departments. Logplan is also organizing the build-up and removal of terminal equipment.
Prior to the start-up of operations, and in each construction stage, Logplan will plan and coordinate operational test runs involving airlines and other terminal users.
Project Management and Start-Up Coordination Concourse B
Since 2006
In order to implement required EU and Non EU passenger separation by 2009, a third level will be built on top of the existing Concourse B building. As a part of the project "Reconstruction of Concourse B", two gates will be modified to be used for A380 and 747-8 aircraft. This includes modifications of the passenger boarding bridges, the gate areas and the apron. Furthermore, the project comprises the improvement of the complete building's structural fire protection. The project will be implemented in four construction phases in order to avoid a shortage of gates and aircraft positions.

Planning and Simulation of Passenger Security Check-Point
2005 - 2007
With changes being made in EU regulation on aviation security, Lufthansa contracted Logplan to determine options for improving the throughput and the flexibility of passenger and carry-on baggage screening while maintaining a high level of security. Logplan evaluated several screening check-point designs through the use of advanced simulation models and provided its recommendations to Lufthansa, Fraport and the German Federal Police.
Based on Logplan's evaluation, one screening design was selected to undergo operational testing at Frankfurt International Airport. Together with Lufthansa and Fraport, Logplan conducted the evaluation of operations and screening procedures. Logplan delivered a comprehensive report to the German Ministry of the Interior on the security check-point concept. The concept has been approved for use by the Ministry for implementation at all security check-points at Frankfurt International Airport.
